Climate resilience solutions (cress project) – for small farming communities
Laikipia Permaculture Centre Trust partnered with arche noVa and Africa Sand Dam Foundation (ASDF) to implement the CRESS project, a two year project aimed at strengthening small farming communities in the fight against food insecurity, water shortage and environmental degradation in Machakos, Makueni, Kitui and Laikipia Counties. Inspired by the Sand dams idea from ASDF the project started building Sand dams in the community to ensure rain water is harvested and is fitted with shallow wells to provide water for the communities.
CRESS project has supported the groups;
- Capacity building of the group leadership on conflicts and governance.
- Trained 4 groups on permaculture, particularly on land use management.
- Trained 4 community groups on Community
- Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) to map potential disasters and develop contingency plans
- Construction of 4 sand dams and 4 shallow wells for domestic and agricultural use. This is promote land regeneration of vegetation
along the rivers - Provision of 2 movable bomas as a sustainable rangeland Management Strategy to cope with the degraded lands
